One question I hear all the time is:
“Jade, my air conditioner is making a strange noise. Is that normal?”
The answer is usually no.
Your HVAC system should operate fairly quietly. While you’ll occasionally hear the system start up or shut down, loud or unusual noises are often your system’s way of telling you something needs attention.
The good news is that many problems are much less expensive to fix when they’re caught early.
Banging Sounds
A loud banging noise may indicate a loose or damaged component inside the system.
Continuing to run your system could cause additional damage, so it’s best to have it inspected sooner rather than later.
Squealing or Screeching
High-pitched squealing can sometimes point to a worn motor bearing or issues with a blower motor.
These problems rarely fix themselves and usually become worse over time.
Buzzing
Buzzing sounds may be caused by electrical components, loose wiring, or a failing capacitor.
Electrical issues should always be inspected by a qualified HVAC technician.
Clicking
It’s normal to hear a click when your system starts or stops.
However, repeated clicking without the system running correctly could indicate a problem with a relay, thermostat, or electrical control.
Hissing
If you hear a hissing sound, it could be something as simple as air escaping from ductwork or it could indicate a refrigerant leak.
Because refrigerant issues require specialized equipment, it’s important to have them inspected promptly.
Rattling
Sometimes the fix is simple.
Loose access panels, screws, or debris near the outdoor unit can create rattling noises.
Other times, rattling may indicate components beginning to loosen inside the equipment.
Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is waiting until the system stops working completely.
Many repairs start as small problems that become much more expensive after weeks or months of continued operation.
My Advice
If your HVAC system suddenly starts making a noise you’ve never heard before, don’t ignore it.
Turn the system off if the noise is severe and give us a call.
We’ll inspect the system, explain exactly what’s going on, and recommend only the repairs that are truly needed.
